  1. If we want to show that the Laramie Project framed Matthew as a martyr and an angel, we can counteract it with what his mom said in this clip, especially the first minute.

  2. Heteroideology/Heterosexism:
An ideological system that denies, degenerates, and stigmatizes any nonheterosexual form of behavior, identity, relationship, or community (Herek, 1990 and Psychology.ucdavis.edu)
"Homosexuality usually remains culturally visible; when people who engage in homosexual behavior or who are identified as homosexual become visible, they are subject to attack by society."
Any example of this is the lack of legal protection from anti-gay discrimination in employment, housing, and services, and hostility and laws against same-sex mearriage.
In the "Laramie Project" we are told a story about Matthew Shepherd, a young man who was gay, that was murdered. Many call it a hate crime. Others may still believe the murder was not solely becauseof Matt being gay. Only recently has has there come things like Matthew Shepherd act and the nondiscrimination ordinances in Salt Lake.
In this movie we also see homophobia, which ties in with heterosexism, the difference being, homophobia deals iwth antigay attitudes and behaviors, and heterosexism is a societal-level ideology and the patterns of institutionalized oppression of non-heterosexual people.
Sexism is negative attitudes based on sexual orientation.
The "Laramie Project" demonstrated all of theses. Many Laramie towns people were shown to dislike the gay culture, lifestyle, or gays themselves. In the case of Matthew Shepherd, in this movie, he was "subject to attacks by society," namely Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney who tied and beat Matthew to a fence left for dead, "degenerating non-heterosexual behavior."
There were no specific laws to protect against what the "Laramie Project" frames as a hate crime.
Many wondered why Matthew's death got so much attention, and some argued that it was purely because of his gender preference.

  3. Selective perception:
This means how we "see the world based on upbringing, race, gender, socioeconomic status, and life experiences. Throughout our life we are exposed to these things differently, and therefore we all "see" things differently. here are some examples.
    1) If a person knew next to nothing about the Matthew Shepherd case, based on this movie, "The Laramie Project," they may see Matthew Shepherd as a young, innocent, happy young man brutally murdered by two straight young men.
    2) Someone who is Gay or Lesbian, or is close to one, may see this movie in a different light. They may see Matthew Shepherd as a Martyr, many towns people as bigots cringe at the protesters, and they may find a connection within-crying with the angel event.
    3) A person very against Gays and Lesbians in general may find this movie very biased, especially because the interviews were done by those who are gay and lesbian. They may agree with the protesters and laugh at the angel event.
There are many ways to view this movie, because there ar emany different people, but the facts are there: A gay man was murdered, take it how you will. Either way, this movie has now added to/changed the experiences and exposure of the viewers, which then leads to Cultivation.

    Cultivation:
The way the "Laramie Project" is framed, the messages conveyed and the images presented have the potential to change individual's perceptions and frames of the world.
After watching this movie, it may influence decisions, behavior, attitude, and life choices concerning gays and lesbians, the town of Laramie, and lifestyles.
For example, after watching "The Laramie Project," one may be more apt to vote to pass laws for hate-crimes against gays.

  16. GATEKEEPING- In the movie Gatekeeping is displayed in a lot of different ways. Some stories covered are on Mathew’s background, giving the public an idea of his personality and his sexual preference. These stories are reported to give people an idea on what kind of a person he was.

According to the movie and the reports Mathew was a fun loving, happy person. It was reported that he had a contagious smile and was very polite and friendly to all people. The stories included in the movie are mostly all supportive towards Mathew. Most of the People they interviewed showed great support towards what happened to Mathew even though he was Homosexual; they showed bitterness and anger towards the attackers. Stories that were also included in the movie are how the crime affected the citizens of Laramie and the town as a whole. After the attack the town was portrayed to people outside the state of Wyoming in a bad light, the citizens of Laramie were ashamed that one of their own could commit such a crime.

An example of the stories that were more omitted from the movie was the views of the attacker’s family and friends, showing what their feelings toward the crime were. They did include Russell’s grandmother’s testimony to the court stating her feelings toward the crime her grandson committed. They also did not include people’s opinions outside the state of Wyoming very much. They did show an example of an outbreak in New York City due to the crime.

  17. FRAMING- In my point of view the movie framed Mathew in a good light. Even though he was homosexual they framed him to be a great person and a great Laramie citizen. The movie framed what happened to Mathew as a horrible and awful hate crime (NEEDS TO BE MAIN FRAME!!!).

They showed that mostly everyone in the town was in support for Mathew and his family (ex:The parade in remembrance for Mathew kept getting larger and larger.) It seemed to me that they framed the people that were against homosexuality in an un-educated stupid farmer kind of way.

  18. CHRISTIANITY- I don't know if we are adding christianity into our project, but here is a little bit on it if we want or decide too.

Christianity and religion was a major theme in the movie. In the video they interviewed a couple different spiritual leaders. The priest portrayed what happened to Mathew as an awful, horrible, disgusting crime. He stated that even though he did not agree with the lifestyle Mathew was living sexually he still did not deserve that awful treatment and that the attackers deserve the consequences.

The Reverend they interviewed was harsher towards the situation. He agreed that the attackers should face consequences and they should face the death penalty, but he also stated that he hopes while Mathew was laying there tied to the fence he was thinking and reflecting on his lifestyle as if it was his fault he was gay and his fault this happened to him.

So Christianity and religion was framed in a couple different views in perspective to the movie.
